The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at McGill University invites applications for two tenure-track positions in the field of ore-forming systems. One of the positions will be the Robert Wares Faculty Scholar in Economic Geology. The other position will be the Osisko Faculty Scholar in Economic Geology. Our preference is to make the appointment at the Assistant Professor level; however, outstanding candidates at higher ranks are also encouraged to apply.
Applicants with interdisciplinary research interests, including but not limited to crustal fluids, hydrothermal and geothermal systems, igneous/sedimentary/metamorphic processes, tectonics, and geophysics, will be considered. We particularly seek individuals who employ integrative approaches through fieldwork, laboratory analyses and experiments, and/or numerical modeling, as well as individuals who address the complex interactions and feedbacks among physical, chemical, and biological processes applicable to ore-forming systems.
The appointees will each establish an externally funded research program, mentor graduate students, and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in their respective fields. A Ph.D. is required at the time of appointment and post-doctoral experience is desirable. Salary will be commensurate with experience and standing in the community. Applicants should submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae, and a statement of research interests and teaching philosophy. Candidates also should arrange for three confidential letters of recommendation to be sent under separate cover by the candidate's referees. Applications and letters should be sent to: Professor John Stix, Chair, Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, McGill University, 3450 University Street, Montreal, Quebec H3A 2A7, Canada. The anticipated start date for the positions is July 1st, 2010. Review of the applications will begin on February 15th, 2010, and continue until the positions are filled. This opening is to enhance our strength in data assimilation and modeling at the mesoscale. The successful applicant will be expected to develop an active research program, supervise graduate students, and teach a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses.
Preference will be given to candidates whose area of expertise is the application of data assimilation to mesoscale numerical weather prediction, particularly in improving forecasts of high impact weather and precipitation.
A Ph. D. in atmospheric or oceanic sciences or a closely-related field is required.
McGill University is an English-speaking university located in Montreal, one of North America's most cosmopolitan cities. For more information about McGill University and the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences please see http://www.mcgill.ca/meteo
Qualified candidates are invited to submit an application, including a curriculum vitae, a research proposal, and a teaching statement to:
Dr. John R. Gyakum, ChairOr by e-mail with pdf format application to: mesoscale@meteo.mcgill.ca
